Free chlorine is the amount of chlorine freely available to kill bacteria and other contaminates.The recommended amount of combined chlorine is no more than 0.2 ppm. Combined chlorine or chloramines is the portion of chlorine that has reacted with the water and microorganisms contained in it. It is a temporary form of chlorine that should be eliminated if there is enough free chlorine in the water to continue killing contaminates. Too much combined chlorine (i.e. more than 0.5 ppm) means that there is not enough free chlorine available to kill all the contaminates. Strips can test the "Free Chlorine", "pH", "Calcium Hardness" and "Total Alkalinity" levels at the same time. We recommend that you test the water chemistry weekly, and maintain the chlorine concentration at 0.5-3.0 ppm. Directions and Use Dip the entire strip into the water and remove immediately. Chlorine levels at or below 1 ppm mean your pool water isn’t sanitized, which can lead to algae growth and bacteria build-up.But what if you’ve added chlorine tablets or granules and the levels won’t change? In other words, it’s the chlorine that hasn’t been used up and is still free to kill contaminants. If there isn’t enough free chlorine in your water, bacteria and other harmful microorganisms can build up.
